Tuchel Secures England Role Until Euro 2028 with New Contract
Thomas Tuchel, England manager, has agreed to a new contract on Thursday, keeping him as head coach through the end of Euro 2028.
The German took over from Gareth Southgate in October 2024 and guided the team to a perfect qualification for this years World Cup in North America, securing victories in every one of the eight group fixtures.
"I feel delighted and honoured to prolong my commitment to England," stated the 52 year old ex Chelsea boss in a Football Association announcement.
"Everyone knows how much I have enjoyed every moment collaborating with my players and staff, and I am eager to take them forward into the World Cup.
"This represents a tremendous chance, and we will give everything to honour the nation," Tuchel continued, noting his prior agreement expired after this years international event.
The Football Association noted that the updated terms with Tuchel offer "stability and complete concentration" following rumours regarding his prospects post World Cup.
Nevertheless, Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham highlighted "performance clauses" within the arrangement.
"We prefer to establish our position clearly, eliminating doubt before entering a competition," Bullingham elaborated. "This provides assurance to the entire staff and the players alike."
Tuchel was previously linked with the permanent managers position at Manchester United.
Yet, by committing to a renewed England deal, he seems to have dismissed any potential shift to Old Trafford after the World Cup.
The Football Association confirmed that Tuchel's key support staff have similarly extended their contracts up to the close of Euro 2028.
"I have received immense backing from Mark, my colleagues at the FA, and supporters everywhere, so I accepted without delay the offer to persist in this ideal position," Tuchel remarked.
Top Choice for the Role
Renewing his contract before this years World Cup underscores the Football Associations trust in Tuchel, who seeks to deliver the England mens side their first significant title in 60 years.
"He proved the ideal choice upon joining for the World Cup effort, and his standing has grown further during the qualifiers. No superior option exists in global football," Bullingham affirmed.
Tuchel, scheduled for the Nations League draw in Brussels on Thursday, expressed in his initial post Southgate interview his aim to earn a "second star" on the England jersey via the 2026 World Cup victory.
Englands sole major international success came in 1966 on home turf, beating West Germany in the Wembley final.
Under Southgate, they nearly broke that drought, falling short in the Euro 2020 and 2024 finals.
Tuchels squad cruised through qualifying, triumphing in all eight encounters in a section that included Albania, Serbia, Latvia, and Andorra.
In the World Cup group, they meet Croatia, Ghana, and Panama.
Yet, sterner challenges may lie ahead in the elimination rounds, potentially pitting England against co hosts Mexico at home in the round of 16 if they lead their group, followed by a conceivable quarter final versus five time winners Brazil.
