Artwork of Trent vandalised before Anfield comeback
An artwork portraying ex-Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has suffered vandalism only hours before his appearance at Anfield with his new club Real Madrid on Tuesday.
The previous Reds defender is set to join the Real lineup for the Champions League fixture, having departed from his lifelong club for Spain at the close of last season.
The 27-year-olds choice to let his deal expire upset certain Liverpool supporters, leading to boos during his last days with the team.
The prominent artwork close to Anfield, introduced in 2019 after Liverpools Champions League success, had faced prior damage when the term "Rat" was scrawled across it.
That same term appeared repeatedly on Tuesday, alongside white paint splashed over the image, though workers swiftly removed the mess.
A chilly welcome seems certain for Alexander-Arnold on Tuesday.
The defender mentioned feeling "mixed emotions" about his return and promised no goal celebration.
He noted that fans could respond as they wished, stressing his enduring affection for the club.
"Regardless of anything, my emotions for Liverpool remain the same," he shared with Amazon Prime.
"I hold memories from there that will endure forever, and no matter the reception, those feelings stay unchanged."
Liverpool coach Arne Slot indicated he would offer a friendly greeting to his ex-player.
"I cherish fond recollections of the athlete and the person," the Dutch coach remarked.
