Top league stage side Lyon knocked out prior to quarterfinals by Celta Vigo
Lyon entered the match with an unbeaten streak in their last eight home fixtures in this tournament, but that run faced an early test when Javi Rueda tangled with Nicolas Tagliafico inside the penalty area in the first minute, though referee Irfan Peljto allowed play to continue.
The first quarter hour passed without any attempts on goal from either team, largely because Roman Yaremchuk could not quite reach an Endrick delivery due to his footwear being slightly undersized.
After dodging that initial incident, Lyon found themselves in trouble once more in the 19th minute when Rueda was involved again, leading to Peljto issuing a direct red card to Moussa Niakhate.
Celta sought to capitalise on their numerical superiority right away, with Pablo Duran collecting a pass and firing from an acute angle, followed by Williot Swedberg testing from close range with a low strike, but Dominik Greif denied both efforts.
Towards the end of the first half, Fer Lopez controlled the ball neatly and created an opening for a shot, yet Greif remained unbreached.
This kept the scoreline even at the break for Les Gones, and given that seven of their previous eight Europa League home matches had ended level after 90 minutes, extra time appeared on the cards.
The prospect of additional play grew stronger in the opening 15 minutes after the restart, as Endrick curled a free kick from 25 yards over the bar, and Sergio Carreira had a close-range poke saved by Greif, until the visitors took the lead shortly past the hour.
Carreira shrugged off pressure and crossed low into the sixyard box, where the ball deflected past Iago Aspas, allowing Rueda to follow in and force it over the line.
The contest might have been decided moments later when Carreira missed just wide, and it nearly was when Rueda bore down on goal but hesitated between shooting and passing, ultimately wasting the chance.
In the closing stages, Paulo Fonseca committed players forward, but a weak header from Corentin Tolisso posed little threat to Ionut Radu, before Ferran Jutgla sealed victory for Os Celestes with a composed finish in stoppage time.
Consequently, Claudio Giraldez’s team has lost only once in their past 10 away outings. They now stand one step from matching their finest Europa League campaign, whereas Lyon, who saw Tagliafico sent off late on, have endured a sevengame winless run across all tournaments.
