Thomas Tuchel Feels Let Down as England Fans Jeer Ben White
Ben White faced a frosty welcome from the crowd as he entered the pitch as a substitute for a dramatic second half at Wembley.
The 28 year old put England ahead in the 81st minute with an easy tap in goal, only to give away a late penalty in added time that Federico Valverde slotted home to secure a point for Uruguay.
Returning to the England squad for the first time since the 2022 World Cup, the Arsenal defender received strong boos when his name echoed through the stadium speakers right after his debut senior international strike.
White departed the World Cup in Qatar four years earlier amid the knockout rounds for what the Football Association described as "personal reasons".
Later stories surfaced about a supposed disagreement with England assistant Steve Holland, a claim former manager Gareth Southgate firmly rejected multiple times. Southgate shared in 2024 that White had chosen not to be available for England selection.
Back in the national team at last, White learned that supporters remained unforgiving during his turbulent short stint on the field.
"We have seen this occur with certain players in the past, and it is regrettable as it does not benefit anybody. The response from the crowd was varied," Tuchel commented.
"It seemed ideal when he netted what appeared to be the decisive goal, though it ultimately was not.
"Ultimately, he might have been overly eager in his defending, yet it was not a foul."
England defender Harry Maguire, who was playing his first international match in 18 months, also supported White.
"Quite mad, netting the opening goal. I reckoned he performed excellently upon entering," Maguire stated.
"He has been solid throughout the training week, with a wide grin and injecting positive vibe into the group. He earned his moment this evening with that strike, and I felt he shone during his time on.
"That penalty call is absurd. It is lenient. He cleared the ball beyond the crossbar. Ben merely attempted to stop the effort.
"It is not a foul challenge, nor is it intentional harm. Such incidents are normal when defending inside the penalty area. Some touching is inevitable."
