Thomas Tuchel admits decision to leave out Trent Alexander-Arnold is unfair

The games at Wembley on Friday and Tuesday represent the last chances for players to shine in an England jersey before Tuchel announces his World Cup team.

That said, Alexander-Arnolds prospects for making the cut for the event in North America look rather limited, since he was not included in the starting group and got passed over for Arsenals Ben White following Jarrell Quansahs withdrawal due to an injury.

White has not featured for England since departing the 2022 World Cup prematurely and then opting out of availability under Tuchels forerunner, Gareth Southgate.

A sportive choice. Maybe a hard choice and maybe to a degree unfair, Tuchel remarked on Thursday while discussing the exclusion of the ex-Liverpool full-back Alexander-Arnold.

I know it creates noise when you leave a player like Trent out. We had a call, I tried to explain the situation. He just has to accept it.

Following a spell blighted by injuries early in his time at Madrid, Alexander-Arnold has displaced Dani Carvajal to secure a steady spot under Alvaro Arbeloa and delivered a key performance as the Spanish powerhouse overcame Manchester City to advance to the Champions League last eight.

The move to reinstate White in the England setup has drawn some backlash.

Reports suggest White clashed with Southgates deputy Steve Holland, resulting in his time away from international duty.

Once I asked Ben if he would be ready to play for me and for England, he straightaway, without hesitation, said he would love to come back and was desperate to come back, the German coach Tuchel continued.

The reaction came within seconds. It was very euphoric, very positive and very emotional about it. That showed me he really means it.

The way he behaves and the way he has trained here in camp has been exceptional, very, very good. It shows his quality.

Tuchel has permitted 11 members of his group, who are more assured of their spots at the World Cup, to bypass the Uruguay encounter, with skipper Harry Kane among them.

As a result, Tottenhams Dominic Solanke and Leeds forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin get an opportunity to stake a claim as potential backups to Kane for the tournament.

Its important the two of them understand its a big chance to be in camp without Harry, to compete for a real chance to start and get good quality minutes, Tuchel stated.

The question is if we are chasing a result do we really take Harry off? When is there a chance to be a sub for Harry? Or do we look for someone who will play with Harry? Or someone who is a good penalty taker?

These are the questions we have to answer.
