Thioune appointed to rescue struggling Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen announced Daniel Thioune as their new manager on Wednesday, charging him with the mission to prevent the faltering Bundesliga team from relegation.

The club kept the details of Thioune's contract under wraps, though reports in German outlets suggest his position hinges on Bremen's ability to remain in the elite division.

The 51 year old, who made history in 2017 as the inaugural German born Black head coach in the nation, lacks experience at the top level yet guided second tier outfit Fortuna Duesseldorf close to elevation last season.

During the 2023-24 campaign's conclusion, Duesseldorf fell short in a penalty shootout after a two part playoff against top flight Bochum. Victory there would have seen them take Bochum's spot in the Bundesliga.

The four time German title holders parted ways with prior boss Horst Steffen on Sunday, as the side languishes just one point clear of the drop zone following a dismal streak without a win in 10 outings.

Thioune acknowledged that he "cannot fix in three days the issues that have built up over the last three months".

"We expect to witness vigour unleashed on the field and a squad fully committed," he continued.

"I am eager to collaborate with the players and certain that we can reach the objectives set by the club."

Thioune has prior experience leading Bremen's fierce regional adversaries Hamburg, yet he reassured fans of his roots in a Bremen loyal family.

"My dad was an avid supporter of Bremen," he noted, recalling the "memorable times" such as their triumphant double in 2004.

Having progressed through coaching education alongside present Germany national team leader and close associate Julian Nagelsmann, Thioune oversaw his initial session with Bremen on Wednesday.

With a Senegalese father, Thioune etched his name in professional football annals as the first German born Black manager upon assuming control at Osnabrueck back in 2017.
