Swedish key striker risks missing crucial World Cup qualifier versus Denmark
Swedish national team coach Tony Gustavsson has confirmed that the Chelsea forward faces a significant chance of sitting out the upcoming match.
"I havent shut the door entirely, but I need to be straightforward with you and with her", he stated, as reported by Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen.
A minor calf problem sidelined Johanna Rytting Kaneryd from Chelseas Champions League quarter final return leg versus Arsenal earlier this month, and her recovery is under close watch.
Rytting Kaneryd has been observed doing solo sessions in preparation for the encounter. Swedens head coach Tony Gustavsson has now indicated that he does not expect her to feature, although the definitive decision will follow consultations with the medical staff on Monday night.
"No matter what update I receive this evening, the chances of seeing her in action tomorrow are very slim. We also have alternative forwards who have completed a full weeks training and are match ready," Gustavsson explained, adding that substituting the Chelsea player will prove a major hurdle.
"To be candid, it is a tough task. There are numerous difficulties, and obviously there is a threshold to what this squad can endure. Integrating fresh faces, implementing changes, and relying on younger talents. Especially regarding guidance, which extends beyond on pitch skills, as we have invested considerable effort into that aspect," Gustavsson remarked.
The Sweden coach mentioned BK Hackens Monica Jusu Bah as a potential stand in for Rytting Kaneryd.
"Those who watched this weeks sessions noticed her playing some time on the right flank. This is a versatile athlete we think can handle both roles. She is certainly a viable choice there as well."
Sweden takes on Denmark at Gamla Ullevi Arena in Gothenburg on Tuesday at 19.00 CET.
