Supporters back sidelined Ronaldo as Saudi tensions escalate
Supporters of Al Nassr voiced their backing for Cristiano Ronaldo on Friday, with the Portuguese forward absent for a second consecutive match amid reports of his frustration concerning player acquisitions.
The 41 year old did not appear in the team lineup for Al Nassr's 2-0 victory over Al Ittihad, having also missed the prior 1-0 success against Al Riyadh on Monday.
Spectators raised signs displaying '7', the number on Ronaldo's jersey, during the seventh minute at Al Nassr's stadium in Riyadh.
Portugal's A Bola outlet reported that Ronaldo has expressed discontent over competing Saudi Pro League sides securing stronger signings in the latest transfer period.
Al Hilal, who lead the league by one point over Al Nassr, acquired former Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema, the player netting three goals on his initial outing after transferring from Al Ittihad.
Al Nassr, Al Hilal, Al Ittihad, and Al Ahli all fall under the ownership of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth body of the oil prosperous nation.
Ronaldo has avoided public remarks, but a statement from the Saudi Pro League, as extensively covered, indicated that the five time Ballon d'Or recipient, "like any elite competitor, wants to win.
"However, no individual, no matter how important, can influence decisions outside of their club."
Ronaldo has not secured the Saudi league title since signing with Al Nassr in January 2023. Many prominent figures have since moved to Saudi Arabia, scheduled to stage the 2034 World Cup.
