Superliga: AGF cruise past bitter rivals Brondby to win first Danish title in 40 years
AGF have claimed the Danish football championship for the first time since 1984.
Aarhus dominated the league standings all season long, and the triumph was sealed with a strong performance at Brondby Stadium on Sunday night.
The visitors secured a 2-0 victory thanks to strikes in the opening half hour, reaching 64 points to clinch the Superliga crown beyond doubt.
FC Midtjylland, on 60 points, must accept runners-up status for another year in a row, though they have an opportunity to lift spirits with the Cup final appearance on Thursday.
Prior to kick off against Brondby, AGF benefited from a surprise when FC Midtjylland managed just a draw away to FC Nordsjaelland in Farum. This outcome ensured that a single victory from AGFs last pair of fixtures, versus Brondby and Viborg, would confirm the championship.
Bolstered by this advantage, AGF began assertively, with Gift Links unleashing a powerful effort from distance that forced a save from goalkeeper Patrick Pentz. Moments later, from the resulting corner, Henrik Dalsgaard nodded the ball home using his knee to open the scoring.
Following that breakthrough, AGF allowed Brondby greater possession, and the hosts threatened to equalise on several occasions. Notably, young talent Raphael Canut, aged 17, squandered a clear opportunity. However, Brondbys profligacy proved costly when Kevin Yakob drove forward, entered the penalty area, and slotted into the far post to make it 2-0 midway through the first half.
The home side pushed hard after the interval yet failed to breach the resilient AGF defence from Aarhus.
