Sunderlands European dreams fade following lacklustre stalemate versus Manchester United

For two teams competing mainly for improved standings in the closing three matches, this encounter should have carried a relaxed end of season atmosphere, yet Sunderland appeared energised right from the start.

The hosts generated a prime opportunity within the first 10 minutes as a fluid sequence of one touch passes culminated with Enzo Le Fee slipping the ball to Noah Sadiki for a clear run at goal, though Senne Lammens produced an excellent reaction stop by diving low to his right to thwart the DR Congo players debut Premier League strike.

Sunderland grew frustrated during the middle of the opening period after believing they deserved a penalty when Le Fees shot struck the extended arm of Amad Diallo, but referee Stuart Attwell along with VAR deemed it unworthy of awarding a kick from the spot.

The Black Cats controlled much of the action in the attacking zone during the first 45 minutes, threatening through Brian Brobbey and another effort from Sadiki prior to the interval, while Joshua Zirkzee squandered Manchester Uniteds sole meaningful attempt by nodding over from Matheus Cunhas delivery, giving Michael Carrick much to consider at half time.

Cunhas shot, which he fired high into the air just after the break, captured Manchester Uniteds difficulties perfectly, and their challenges nearly worsened soon past the hour.

Le Fee played a key role once more by locating Brobbey in the penalty area, yet the forwards low drive with his left foot was superbly parried by Lammens.

The Manchester United goalkeeper found himself exposed shortly afterwards as Brobbey set up Lutsharel Geertruida, whose powerful attempt struck the upright while mounting tension surrounded the visitors goal.

Carrick resorted to his substitutes by bringing on key player Bryan Mbeumo towards the end in hopes of securing a fourth straight victory, but the Cameroon international contributed minimally for the away side, who managed only one effort on target, which arrived in added time of the second half courtesy of Cunha.

Earning a draw represents no major setback for Manchester United, who stay well positioned to secure third place with only two fixtures left, whereas this result effectively eliminates Sunderlands slim prospects of qualifying for Europe.
