Suarez late header thwarts Champions League champions PSG during Lisbon clash
In a thrilling conclusion, Luis Suarez delivered a header in added time that resulted in a 2-1 loss for Paris Saint Germain against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday, threatening the Champions League defending champions prospects for a top eight position and automatic advancement to the knockout rounds.
The Colombian forward Suarez scored both goals for Sporting in the latter period, clinching the win with his 90th minute header following an equaliser from PSG substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
After wins by Real Madrid and Tottenham, PSG sit on 13 points in provisional fifth place ahead of Wednesdays fixtures, with Sporting hot on their heels.
Their upcoming home fixture versus Newcastle in a weeks time will decide if the French side can bypass the two legged playoff round in February.
"This has been our strongest away performance of the season," commented PSG manager Luis Enrique.
"The outcome feels frustrating and unjust. Its regrettable as I witnessed only one side dominating the whole game. We outplayed a strong adversary. Its deeply upsetting due to the unfairness."
Even with clear superiority, PSG found it hard to generate clear cut openings, as their build up play near the box appeared feeble and foreseeable against the Lisbon backline.
The Brazilian Marquinhos came near with two headers in the opening stages yet missed the target both times.
Warren Zaire-Emery netted after 30 minutes but the effort was chalked off following a VAR check, marking one of three disallowed goals for PSG in the encounter.
Ousmane Dembele squandered an effort from near the goal line three minutes prior to halftime.
Sporting custodian Rui Silva stood firm, denying attempts from Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, and Bradley Barcola.
Sporting endured the pressure and fashioned a few encouraging moves, the standout being Suarezs failure to finish a threatening delivery from Francisco Trincao directly in front of the net six minutes into the second half.
Suarez made amends and sparked the local supporters with a sharp strike past Lucas Chevalier on 74 minutes. A mishandled corner coupled with an unlucky ricochet undid the previously solid Paris defence.
Kvaratskhelia restored parity on 79 minutes yet Suarez netted once more near the end.
For PSG supporters, tension will linger right up to the conclusion in their push for a top eight berth.
