Spain Secure Goalless Draw Versus Germany in Opening Leg of Womens Nations League Final

World champions Spain managed to hold Germany to a goalless stalemate during the opening match of their Womens Nations League final held in Kaiserslautern on Friday, with goalkeeper Cata Coll pulling off a number of vital stops in preparation for the return fixture in Madrid on Tuesday.

The host nation controlled large portions of the encounter while Spain adopted a defensive posture to safeguard their net, apparently relying on securing victory on home soil.

Germany entered the clash motivated by a desire to settle scores with the World Cup victors, following their exit from the Euro 2025 semi finals at the hands of Spain in Switzerland back in July.

Prior to kick off, Spains coach Sonia Bermudez vowed her team would avoid settling for a tie yet their approach suggested otherwise, as they dropped back, delayed proceedings and drew jeers from the local supporters.

Early in the first period, Franziska Kett compelled Coll to make a frantic block using her legs.

Jule Brand soon after found herself with a stronger opportunity, only for Irene Paredes to block the effort right on the goal line.

Spains clearest opening arrived when Esther Gonzalez struck the upright in the 52nd minute.

Klara Buehl, who had created four notable openings before the interval, also rattled the woodwork during the 71st minute while leaving Coll rooted to the spot.

The home side nearly snatched a winner deep into added time as Jule Brand slipped the ball to Sjoeke Nuesken, though Coll reacted swiftly by rushing out of her area to avert the threat.
