South Korea Dominates Iran in Women's Asian Cup Opening Fixture
South Korea secured top spot in Pool A of the Women's Asian Cup by beating a tenacious Iran 3-0 in their initial group match on Queensland's Gold Coast on Monday.
The Korean outfit, who finished second to China in the 2022 competition, utterly controlled a valiant but overmatched Iran team. The Iranians displayed no impact from the conflict back home, even as some fans brandished flags from the shah period.
Casey Phair from South Korea, who entered as a substitute during the second half, noted that her team has significant areas to enhance.
"We worked really hard and performed really well but we could have scored a few more goals and we missed a couple of chances," Phair said.
"That's something we can work on in training but I think it was a really good starting point for the tournament."
South Korea leads the group on goal difference, coming after Australia's slim 1-0 triumph over the Philippines on Sunday.
The Koreans asserted dominance right from the beginning, with Iran opting for a defensive setup to curb the threats instead of mounting their own assaults.
This strategy proved effective for much of the opening period, despite the Koreans holding 81 per cent possession and unleashing 20 attempts on target.
Yet, the unyielding offensive pressure bore fruit in the 37th minute, as Jang Sel-gi's strike hit the post and deflected to Choe Yu-ri, who finished with her left foot to hand South Korea a 1-0 advantage at half-time.
Iran brought on three replacements during the break and adopted a bolder approach in the second half.
They generated an infrequent opportunity in the 56th minute, but Zahra Ghanbari's effort sailed directly to goalkeeper Kim Min-jung.
The contest was virtually settled four minutes later, when Lee Eun-young was tripped in the penalty area by Melika Motevalli, enabling Kim Hye-ri to dispatch the spot-kick.
South Korea's skipper Ko Yoo-jin added the finishing touch with a header from Kim Hye-ri's 75th-minute free-kick, netting her initial goal for the national side.
South Korea faces the Philippines next, while Australia clashes with Iran in a double-header on the Gold Coast on Thursday.
The top two teams from each of the three groups, plus the two highest-ranking third-placed squads, will move on to the quarter-finals. Qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil awaits the top six teams.
