Slot praises key Isak strike in Liverpool win against West Ham

Arne Slot stated that Alexander Isaks debut Premier League goal for Liverpool held great significance for the forward and the current English title holders, following their 2-0 triumph at West Ham on Sunday, which halted a poor streak.

Isak had gone goalless in his prior five Premier League outings after his record breaking 125 million pounds (165 million dollars) transfer from Newcastle in September, with his sole other Reds goal in the League Cup.

However, the Swedish attackers excellent effort at the London Stadium, combined with Cody Gakpos late goal in added time, delivered Liverpool, who had suffered nine losses in their last 12 fixtures across all tournaments, a much required boost.

"It meant a lot to us as a squad to take a 1-0 lead, yet it was equally vital for him as this was likely his third or fourth opportunity in the match," remarked Slot, the Liverpool boss.

"He only had about 10 minutes left in the tank, so netting right before substitution was beneficial for the team and personally rewarding for him."

Isak stepped up decisively to arrest Liverpools concerning downturn by benching Mohamed Salah in favour of the new signing.

This marked the first occasion the Egyptian forward missed a Premier League starting spot since April 2024, during a 2-2 stalemate at West Ham.

On that previous visit, Salah entered as a substitute near the end, but this time he remained unused, with Hugo Ekitike coming on soon after Isaks score.

"Mo has enjoyed an extraordinary tenure at this club and boasts a bright prospects here due to his exceptional talent," Slot continued.

"With four matches scheduled in 10 days and just 14 to 15 outfield options at our disposal, rotations become necessary at times to select the optimal lineup for each encounter."
