Scaloni expects to field 'fundamental' Messi as Argentina commence World Cup defence

The 38-year-old captain will be playing in his record sixth World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Both his coach and fellow players emphasised that his influence is still as strong as ever as the current champions prepare to face Algeria on Tuesday.

"We believe everyone, not just Argentines, wants to see him on the pitch and watch him play," Scaloni told reporters on Monday. He confirmed that the forward has recovered from a recent muscle strain and is likely to be in the starting line-up.

Messi started on the bench in Argentina's 2-0 friendly win over Honduras on 6 June, but came on as a substitute in their 3-0 victory against Iceland last week. He scored one of the goals from the penalty spot.

Scaloni rejected any notion that the Inter Miami player's presence could be a burden for the South American team. He stated that Messi's impact has never diminished despite playing under varying physical conditions over the years.

"He has been there consistently and has always been fundamental for us. Even more so now," the coach remarked.

Long-serving teammate Otamendi, who is also approaching what is likely to be his last World Cup, reflected on their shared journey that includes the title in Qatar 2022. He described Messi as "the greatest player in history."

"We have shared many wonderful moments together," the 38-year-old said.

"He is an unassuming person who enjoys training camps and sessions, and he prepares accordingly. He is also a fierce competitor. That drives you to keep striving, not to let up, to stay by his side, to back him up and assist him."
