Sacking Amorim set to hit Manchester United with £16 million bill
Manchester Uniteds choice to dismiss Ruben Amorim from his role as manager might result in the Premier League powerhouse facing a financial hit of nearly £16 million about $22 million based on details from the clubs latest financial disclosures.
The Portuguese managers challenging 14 month stint concluded on January 5 after he openly criticised the clubs leadership with his five assistants departing Old Trafford alongside him.
In a submission to the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday the club outlined the potential payouts to Amorim and his team occurring just a day after announcing a £32.6 million profit for their second quarter up to December 31 2025.
Classed as an occurrence post the reporting timeframe United noted A charge of £6.3 million for the write off of associated intangible assets plus a provision of £15.9 million which stands for the highest conceivable future settlement costs will appear in the profit or loss statement for the latter half of the fiscal year concluding June 30 2026.
Reports indicate the full £15.9 million figure hinges on conditions like the 41 year old Amorim securing fresh employment within a set period.
The financial records further reveal United settled £6.3 million with Sporting representing the remaining compensation due to the Portuguese outfit for recruiting Amorim.
Back in a November 2024 disclosure to regulators United stated they were compensating Sporting £10 million overall to bring in Amorim as successor to Erik ten Hag whose own departure from Old Trafford totalled £10.4 million in costs.
Overall the expenditure linked to Amorims tenure could reach £37.3 million for United.
Amorim secured 25 victories from 63 matches overseeing the side to a 15th place finish in the Premier League marking Uniteds poorest showing since their drop from the elite division in the 1973 74 campaign.
At the time of his removal United sat sixth in the Premier League having reportedly clashed significantly with football director Jason Wilcox shortly before his last outing against Leeds.
However with interim manager Michael Carrick at the helm the team has climbed to fourth thanks to a streak of five triumphs and one draw boosting aspirations for qualification to next years Champions League.
