Ruben Amorim Shields Himself from Online Abuse as Manchester United Manager
Manchester United's head coach Ruben Amorim has disclosed that he steers clear of social media to safeguard against abusive comments, despite the potential loss of valuable endorsement deals.
The Portuguese tactician has faced a turbulent initial year leading the team at Old Trafford.
United ended the previous Premier League season in 15th position, marking their poorest performance in the top division since the 1973/74 relegation, and they missed out on European tournaments.
Recent performances have shown some progress, elevating Amorim's squad to seventh in the standings before hosting West Ham on Thursday.
The 40 year old noted that verbal attacks online are commonplace for elite coaches, and he deliberately avoids those sites to defend his wellbeing and that of his relatives.
"I avoid reading it. I take steps to guard myself," he stated during a press briefing ahead of the match on Wednesday.
"I skip television coverage discussing Manchester United. Not due to disagreement, as I often concur. Rather, it helps me maintain mental health.
"Suffering a defeat, a stalemate, or a subpar display provides sufficient emotional strain as a manager. I require no additional sentiments from club surroundings.
"The best approach is self protection. Naturally, this costs me sponsorship revenue. Through Instagram, substantial earnings are possible.
"Yet, the value of my daily existence, family security, and leading an ordinary routine outweigh it. Extra pounds or dollars fail to justify the trade off."
Manchester United attacker Matheus Cunha should be available again from injury on Thursday, offering a welcome reinforcement before the intense holiday matches.
The Brazilian sat out the prior two fixtures right as he started settling in at Old Trafford following his summer transfer from Wolves.
"He possesses further potential to unlock," Amorim remarked. "Adapting to a new environment brings varied demands, yet he handles it effectively.
"Early on, he faced difficulties from a lack of goals and overfocus on statistics.
"His contribution to the squad proves vital, though I believe Cunha can advance considerably in defensive and attacking aspects."
Manchester United continue without Harry Maguire and Benjamin Sesko due to ongoing injuries.
