Rooney urges patience for young Premier League record holder Dowman
Wayne Rooney feels that patience is essential as the teenage sensation and Premier League record breaker Max Dowman keeps advancing impressively at Arsenal while preparing for his forthcoming school examinations.
Dowman made history as the youngest ever scorer in the Premier League with an excellent strike versus Everton during the recent match, achieving this feat at just 16 years and 73 days old, which helped secure a 2-0 victory for the league topping Arsenal against Everton at their home ground.
Rooney, more than anyone, appreciates the challenges Dowman faces, having himself burst onto the scene five days prior to turning 17 when he netted for Everton in that very same encounter back in 2002 as a former England forward.
Dowman has upcoming GCSE public exams scheduled for later in the year.
"In my case, football always came before schooling, though I am unsure about his circumstances, if schooling takes priority then we might not see him much in the coming months," Rooney commented on the BBCs Wayne Rooney Show.
"No doubt Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal boss, would have met with his parents and relatives to discuss the importance of his studies. I reckon, particularly at this time, he will not feature as often as he might wish, but he should simply complete those exams first, as there are plenty of years ahead.
"It is a fantastic chance for him to stay with the team. He might even lift the Premier League trophy while still wrapping up his schoolwork."
Rooney, who later thrived in his career at Manchester United and for England, is thrilled by Dowmans skills.
"He possesses a certain presence and self assurance, much like what I observed in the game against Everton," he added.
"From the matches I have seen, he handles pressure well, keeping possession when receiving the ball. He engages defenders, attempts to beat them, and clearly shows a strong sense of confidence.
"This represents a pivotal point in his personal and professional journey, something I experienced myself at 16, and it will remain a cherished memory forever.
"With a promising youngster like him emerging at 16, it is evident he has tremendous talent, and we can only hope he realises his full potential.
"Allow him to savour the experience and perform freely."
