On Friday, Rome's city council voted decisively to support Serie A team AS Roma's proposal for a new stadium in the north-eastern area of the Italian capital, targeting matches in Euro 2032.

Out of 44 councillors, 39 endorsed the club's "technical and economic feasibility study" for the venture, set to launch in 2027.

"Everyone is delighted, with such a clear majority backing this stadium," commented Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri.

"We expect building work to start in the early part of 2027, positioning it to accommodate Euro 2032 fixtures."

Italy plans to co-host the 2032 European football event with Turkey.

That said, the initiative awaits clearance from several official bodies, notably regional authorities.

AS Roma shares Rome's Stadio Olimpico with rivals Lazio, yet both sides have long sought independent venues.

The Giallorossi, managed by the US Friedkin family, have devoted recent months to designing a 60,000-capacity stadium in Pietralata, north-east of Rome, at an estimated one billion euros.

Lazio, meanwhile, seeks to overhaul the Stadio Flaminio, idle since Italy's rugby squad ended its Six Nations appearances there.

"We are applying the same care to this endeavour," the mayor noted.

Italy's stadium infrastructure has sparked debates as Euro 2032 approaches.

Back in May, UEFA head Aleksander Ceferin labelled the nation's facilities as "shameful".

This year, Italy is required to select five locations for tournament games.
