Romanian football legend Mircea Lucescu passes away at the age of 80
The passing of Mircea Lucescu took place on Tuesday, with confirmation from the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital, known as SUUB.
The Bucharest University Emergency Hospital shares that on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at approximately 8:30 PM, the passing of Mr Mircea Lucescu was officially noted.
Mr Mircea Lucescu stood out as one of Romania's most accomplished football coaches and players, marking history by guiding the national team to qualification for the 1984 European Championship.
Countless generations of Romanians hold his memory dear as a cherished national icon. Rest in peace. The SUUB declared.
Mircea Lucescu entered the Bucharest University Hospital on an emergency basis on March 29th, following a sudden illness that struck during a pre training technical discussion with the national football squad.
By April 2nd, he stepped down from his role as head coach of Romania subsequent to his hospital stay.
His health declined further on Sunday, April 5th, leading medical experts to move him into the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Unit, where an induced coma was initiated.
Towards midday on Tuesday, the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital provided an update on Mircea Lucescu's condition.
Medical personnel reported that a CT scan revealed several indicators of cerebral ischaemic strokes alongside regions affected by pulmonary thromboembolism.
