Ricky van Wolfswinkel announces retirement in emotional statement
In a remarkable professional journey, Van Wolfswinkel has represented eight clubs and accumulated more than 600 matches, with spells at Vitesse, FC Utrecht, Sporting CP, Norwich City, Saint Etienne, Real Betis, Basel, and most recently FC Twente.
A consistent scorer wherever he played, the Dutch forward has had his most successful run in the Eredivisie, netting 62 goals across 191 games for Twente, including nine this season.
At 37 years of age, Van Wolfswinkel plans to step away from the game when his deal ends in June, sharing an emotional post on the teams YouTube channel.
"After 18 years at the highest level, there comes a moment when you feel: its enough, its time. What started as a dream, grew into a life. A life filled with discipline, sacrifices and unforgettable highs, but also setbacks that made me stronger. I gave it everything I had," the ex Norwich player reflected.
"Every training session, every match, every moment, always with a smile. And I am grateful to my teammates, my coaches, my family, my wife, and our kids and everyone who supported me along the way.
"This sport has shaped me into the person I am today, not as a player, but as a human being. Now it is time for a new chapter, a new challenge, off the pitch. Im not saying goodbye to the sport, only to my career as a professional athlete. Thank you for everything."
Van Wolfswinkel has stated he intends to stay involved in football after retiring, so fans will be keen to learn about his future endeavours.
