Rayo Vallecano advances to Conference League final following narrow victory over Strasbourg
A stunning one handed stop by Mike Penders during the seventh minute denied Alemão an early advantage for Rayo, while Jorge de Frutos blazed over for the away side from a promising position.
In comparison, Strasbourg had only achieved two contacts inside Rayo’s box by the halfway mark of the opening period, and they were finding it hard to establish any rhythm, as the flair from Valentin Barco and the flank contributions of Julio Enciso were entirely subdued.
Penders was alert once more when Unai Lopez unleashed a effort from distance, and the Spanish team kept applying intense pressure until they were rewarded in the 42nd minute.
Penders’ superb stop from Florian Lejeune’s controlled right foot volley landed directly at the feet of Alemão, who put Rayo ahead in the match.
Guela Doue’s attempt on goal straight afterwards marked the home team’s initial effort, and without enhancing that level of involvement, it promised to be a challenging evening ahead for them.
Should Strasbourg have anticipated relief in the latter half, they were proven wrong, requiring Penders’ agile intervention yet again to block Isi Palazon’s powerful strike. It was tough to envision the home side mounting a comeback, considering Rayo dictated the pace and, with 19 attempts compared to Strasbourg’s three, the away team dominated virtually every facet.
Martial Godo emerged as the standout performer for the hosts, his five challenges surpassing any other individual from both teams. That offered scant comfort to the French side though, as a stoppage time spot kick from Enciso, heroically repelled by Augusto Batalla, captured the essence of their night.
This outcome leaves Strasbourg with five defeats in their previous six outings across all tournaments, marking their exit from European action shortly after elimination from the Coupe de France. Rayo on the other hand remain unbeaten across five fixtures (W4, D1), and justly progress to the final of the tournament to face Crystal Palace in Leipzig.
