Raphael Wicky appointed head coach at MLS Sporting Kansas City

The MLS side Sporting Kansas City revealed on Monday that Swiss manager Raphael Wicky is their latest head coach appointment.

Aged 48, Wicky steps into the role after managing Switzerland's Young Boys and the Chicago Fire, taking over from Peter Vermes. The American left the club in March following a 15 year stint, after the 2025 campaign began with five defeats and one tie.

"Rapha's squads focus on attacking football, bring high energy and emphasise ball possession, which matches the playing style we aim to develop," commented David Lee, the club's president of soccer operations.

Having led Chicago during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Wicky took Young Boys to the 2022-23 Swiss Super League championship along with the Cup triumph. During his time there, the team recorded 51 wins, 17 losses and 20 draws, scoring an average of 2.19 goals per match.

"I am thrilled to begin and to connect with the team, staff and players," Wicky expressed.

"This club possesses everything needed to return to its rightful position."

Last season, Sporting finished with a 7-20-7 record, placing 27th in the MLS standings.
