Ralf Rangnick hails World Cup debutants Jordan after Austria's fortunate victory
At various points, Austria were left vulnerable by a courageous Jordan team competing in their inaugural World Cup match. Although they entered the encounter as the favourites, they eventually secured the win only through a penalty scored by substitute Marko Arnautovic deep into second-half stoppage time.
Austria's prospects had been boosted by a strong showing at Euro 2024, but Tuesday's performance might have dampened those hopes, particularly with a fixture looming against Group J pacesetters Argentina, who defeated Algeria 3-0.
Nevertheless, Rangnick gave credit to Jordan for containing his team.
"I believe it is down to the opposition," the coach stated when questioned about Austria's difficulties.
Jordan performed excellently throughout the game. We anticipated a tough opponent. We were aware they would be far from straightforward, but today they exhibited a very courageous style of play. They surpassed what I had anticipated.
"I am aware that some of you expected us to be the favourites in this match, but we certainly were not."
Rangnick said he appreciated that the World Cup's enlargement to 48 teams offered more nations the opportunity to take part, describing it as "an enriching experience".
He also remarked that the so-called lesser nations were not merely filling the roster, citing Spain's unexpected draw with Cape Verde, Australia's surprising victory over Turkey, and Haiti's tenacious showing against Scotland.
"It is not that straightforward to win in this tournament. We have 48 teams and there will be no easy opponents," he stated.
"The teams have genuinely closed the gap over the last 15 years or thereabouts, so there truly are no easy sides."
