Putellas Stars in Barcelona's Rout of Real Madrid to Advance to Women's Champions League Semi Finals
Alexia Putellas delivered an outstanding performance for the Catalan club during her landmark 500th match, which marked their initial outing at the renovated Camp Nou, following their commanding 6-2 win in the quarter final first leg.
The three time champions Barca have now progressed to their eighth straight semi final, as forward Caroline Graham Hansen scored a brace and Putellas contributed a goal in the comprehensive victory.
Pere Romeus formidable team, who finished as runners up to Arsenal in the previous season, are set to meet Bayern Munich in the last four after the Germans eliminated Manchester United on Wednesday.
Even without crucial player and extended absentees Aitana Bonmati, Barca staged an impressive display to thrill a 60,000 strong audience, the fourth largest turnout in the tournaments records.
"We did a good job last week as a team, to be able to come here today (with the lead) and we wanted to put on a good game for all the fans who came," Graham Hansen shared with TV3.
"We wanted to enjoy our return to Camp Nou with the fans and the six goals helps send everyone home happy... It obviously helps when you have 60,000, 80,000 or 90,000 fans because they support you and help you sink the opposition."
Double Ballon dOr recipient Putellas opened the scoring for Barca soon after the start, slotting in the rebound following Misa Rodriguezs stop from Ewa Pajor.
Graham Hansen quickly made it two for the Liga F frontrunners with a header off a Putellas delivery.
Irene Paredes headed in from a set piece to give Barca their third, mirroring her effort from the initial encounter, as Madrid fell apart.
Polish forward Pajor claimed the fourth via a simple finish up close after Rodriguez failed to clear a headed effort.
Athenea del Castillo missed a poke for Madrid just before the interval, wasting their clearest opportunity.
The Norwegian attacker Graham Hansen added Barcas fifth shortly into the second period, spinning clear of her defender and chipping the ball neatly.
Pajor and Graham Hansen passed up additional chances while Barca kept control, with Esmee Brugts sealing the sixth through a simple finish after a tidy sequence featuring Patri Guijarro and Clara Serrajordi.
Barcas ecstatic supporters applauded Putellas fittingly as she exited late in the game. The 32 year old talent is approaching the end of her contract this season, yet performances like these will fuel strong calls for her extension.
