PSGs Shootout Hero Safonov Sidelined Until Next Year After Hand Fracture
Paris Saint Germains goalkeeper Matvei Safonov, the standout performer in their Intercontinental Cup victory, has broken his left hand, the club announced on Friday.
The Russian stopper blocked four penalties in the shootout held in Qatar on Wednesday, enabling PSG to narrowly overcome Brazilian outfit Flamengo and secure yet another piece of silverware.
The club issued a statement saying "Matvei Safonov sustained a fracture in his left hand after the encounter with Flamengo. We will offer more details in three to four weeks time."
This update arrives right before their journey to take on fifth division side Vendee Fontenay in the French Cup. Expect either regular starter Lucas Chevalier or reserve option Renato Marin between the posts.
Safonovs misfortune temporarily halts any conversation about the primary goalkeeper position for the European title winners.
The 26 year old kicked off the campaign as the deputy but his decisive actions in Qatar built on a series of solid outings deputising for Chevalier, who picked up an ankle knock towards the end of November amid a turbulent beginning to his year.
Chevalier, marking his 24th birthday in November, arrived during the summer window as head coach Luis Enrique valued his distribution from the back, although he has at times seemed unsteady when facing efforts on goal.
