Pressured Alonso comments on how Real Madrid's fortunes can shift rapidly
Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, facing intense scrutiny, emphasised that circumstances can turn around fast before a crucial Champions League encounter with Manchester City on Wednesday.
The Spanish giants have secured victory in only two of their previous seven matches in various tournaments, including a 2-0 defeat to Celta Vigo in La Liga on Sunday, with reports in Spain suggesting Alonso could be dismissed if they lose to Pep Guardiola's team.
"We are a cohesive squad and club, staying together, and as Real Madrid's head coach, one must handle such challenges with composure, solidarity, and accountability," Alonso stated to journalists on Tuesday.
"I am eager for the upcoming challenge, beginning tomorrow. We understand that shifts can occur, moving from the frustration of (Sunday) which was expected, to the anticipation of (meeting City)...
"Whether positive or negative, football alters swiftly, altering viewpoints, and we find ourselves in such a phase."
Last week, Madrid delivered an outstanding display under Alonso, triumphing 3-0 over Athletic Bilbao at San Mames, only to falter against Celta at home.
Alonso expressed confidence that his side can overcome Manchester City and star forward Erling Haaland at the Bernabeu, improving their standing in the league phase standings, where they sit fifth at present.
"Mentally, the team is prepared for the task ahead, remaining unified, all believing we can secure a win tomorrow," Alonso added.
"We must maintain high pace and vigour, compete fiercely, without question."
When questioned about full backing from his squad, Alonso replied affirmatively, as echoed by midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who supported his manager.
"In the match against Vigo, the manager devised a solid strategy, but ultimately, it is the players executing on the field," noted the French player.
"Performing at our best increases our odds of success in these fixtures; a 2-0 loss indicates issues on the pitch, like lack of drive or mistakes in execution.
"Thus, it is not the manager's responsibility; we need to elevate our game, and we shall."
