Porto win Portuguese title for first time since 2022 with narrow win over Alverca
With this victory, they pulled nine points ahead of Benfica in second position, after the Lisbon side drew 2-2 away to Famalicao earlier in the day.
A powerful header by Jan Bednarek from a corner kick during the 40th minute proved decisive, securing the win and clinching the championship for Porto for the first time since 2022.
This success caps an outstanding inaugural campaign for head coach Francesco Farioli, marking his debut trophy as a manager, and elevates Porto's tally to 31 league titles, trailing only Benfica with 38.
Benfica, managed by ex-Porto boss Jose Mourinho, took a two goal lead at Famalicao, yet central defender Nicolas Otamendi received a red card shortly after the interval.
Famalicao responded strongly to earn a draw, allowing the title to slip into Porto's grasp.
"This match captures the essence of the entire league season," Mourinho commented, expressing frustration over the refereeing decisions.
"Congratulations to FC Porto as worthy title winners."
