Penalty hero Maarten Paes speaks of 'fantastic day' as Ajax reach Europe
Following a goalless 90 minutes between Ajax and FC Utrecht, the match extended into extra time, culminating in a 1-1 draw. The decisive moment came through a penalty shootout, determining which team would advance to the second round of the UEFA Conference League qualifiers.
Maarten Paes, Ajax's goalkeeper, emerged as the standout performer by saving two crucial penalties. His heroics ensured Ajax avoided their first season without European football since 1990.
"Winning a penalty shootout is always special, especially when you contribute by making saves. Fortunately, I was able to stop two," Paes shared with ESPN after the match.
Paes' first pivotal save was against Sebastien Haller, a player with an impressive penalty record of 31 successful attempts and only two misses. The goalkeeper had meticulously studied Haller's technique to gain an edge.
"Haller is undoubtedly skilled at penalties. I attempted to engage him verbally, aware of his tendency to glance down before striking. By simulating a move, I hoped to disrupt his focus. My research included his rare misses, like one for Dortmund and another against AZ during a shootout with Tim Krul while I was at Utrecht. Those memories guided my approach."
The second save came against Souffian El Karouani, known for his expertise in free kicks. "Given his free kick style, I anticipated he might favour his standing leg for penalties, adding that characteristic curl. My hunch paid off."
'Fantastic day'
Ajax found themselves in the play-offs after a fifth place finish in the Eredivisie, a result below their usual standards. Despite the setback and playing away from their home ground, the Johan Cruyff ArenA, due to a concert by Harry Styles, the team remained focused on their objective.
"Entering the play-offs, our sole aim was victory. These matches in Volendam turned into a celebration, thanks to our incredible supporters. Their unwavering support, despite a challenging season, made both Thursday and today unforgettable. Their energy has been instrumental in our success."
