Paris FC's Bold Ambitions Yielding Gradual Gains in Elite French Football
After earning promotion to Frances premier football division last season following a takeover by the affluent Arnault family, Paris FC still appear some way from challenging the established powerhouses of Ligue 1.
The citys secondary club has signalled its entry into the top tier by relocating to the Stade Jean Bouin, a venue with 20000 seats shared with rugby union outfit Stade Francais, located directly opposite Paris Saint Germains Parc des Princes.
Its proximity to PSGs ground is such that the current French and European title holders operate a team store integrated into the Stade Jean Bouin structure.
Paris FC seems destined to operate under the influence of their prominent local rivals for the foreseeable future.
It has been nearly a year since the Arnault family, among the worlds richest with Bernard Arnault at the helm of luxury firm LVMH, acquired the club. Beverage powerhouse Red Bull also acquired a minority stake.
Development has been measured, featuring investments in the transfer market ahead of the current campaign yet without standout marquee acquisitions. The most notable additions include Brazilian defender Otavio from Porto and Nigerian forward Moses Simon from Nantes.
Their standout performer remains Algerian international winger Ilan Kebbal, with the club since 2022, who has netted five goals and provided four assists thus far this term.
Under the guidance of coach Stephane Gilli, they have secured only three victories in their opening 10 matches and hold a position just two points clear of the drop zone.
Yet on Wednesday, Paris FC produced their most striking outcome to date, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to secure a 3-3 draw against Lyon at home, observed by Jurgen Klopp, Reds Bulls global soccer chief. This prepares them for Saturdays journey to Monaco.
"Each fixture in Ligue 1 presents challenges, but I believe the squad is advancing, we are following the correct path, and with our current roster we possess all the elements for a solid campaign," skipper Maxime Lopez, formerly of Marseille, shared with AFP lately.
What constitutes a successful term? "Our main goal is to ensure we stay up," Gilli noted recently.
Meanwhile, Paris FC keeps adjusting to the demands of top level play, and January may prove crucial with the transfer period commencing and a long awaited clash against PSG across the way, their first since 1978.
