'Pardon my language': Ajax director Menno Geelen speaks of woeful season
Ajax's fifth-place finish marked their joint-poorest performance this century and their second-worst since 1965. The Amsterdam side saw three different managers take charge, suffered elimination from the UEFA Champions League in the League Phase, exited the KNVB Beker in January, and only secured a spot in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers after defeating FC Utrecht on penalties in Sunday's play-off final.
In an interview with ESPN before Sunday's match, general manager Menno Geelen reflected on the 2025-26 campaign.
"Regardless of today's outcome, this season has been abysmal," Geelen stated.
"Apologies for the language, but I believe everyone at Ajax shares this sentiment. The supporters, in particular, have been outstanding, backing us relentlessly across Europe, in both home and away fixtures, including last Thursday."
Major turmoil
Ajax managed just four victories between February and May, not counting this week's play-offs. Amid intense scrutiny, newly-appointed technical director Jordi Cruyff removed interim boss Fred Grim, bringing in Spaniard Óscar García as his replacement.
With at least three players departing as free agents and speculation linking Cruyff with up to 15 new signings, Geelen acknowledged a hectic summer lies ahead for the club.
"The upcoming months will be extremely demanding, particularly for our technical team. Jordi is intensely focused, not just on immediate concerns but primarily on next season. He's collaborating closely with his staff. We're confident next year will see us contesting for significantly loftier honours than a play-off final berth."
Discontent has permeated Ajax's hierarchy, with reports suggesting Director of Football Marijn Beuker may join Club Brugge. However, Geelen remains optimistic about calmer days ahead.
"Our Supervisory Board now boasts a robust structure, featuring seasoned individuals. All football committees are well-organised, with knowledgeable figures comprising the Board. We've also welcomed a new technical director and managers. Together, they must make astute decisions to ensure we avoid a repeat next season."
Ajax will commence their UEFA Conference League qualifying campaign on July 23rd and 30th.
