Newcastle Chief Executive Withholds Firm Endorsement for Eddie Howe Amid Recent Setbacks
Newcastle under Howe have fallen to 12th position in the Premier League after a tense 2-1 home defeat at St James Park in their final match prior to the international interruption, allowing newly promoted Sunderland to claim a double triumph against their local opponents.
This setback arrived soon after Newcastle experienced a dramatic breakdown during their Champions League clash in Barcelona, enduring a crushing 7-2 defeat following a level 1-1 outcome in the opening fixture versus the La Liga outfit.
"I lack a position regarding his prospects. What I can share is that the local derby defeat stung," Hopkinson stated to journalists.
"We regard it with gravity. There is no part of us that views it as merely three points lost and move forward. The impact lingers.
"I recently shared a couple of hours over lunch in a private meeting with Eddie, discussing various matters, among them this issue."
Howe, who committed to a lengthy deal in 2022, faces seven upcoming fixtures to elevate Newcastle's league standing if European involvement awaits next term. They trail sixth placed Chelsea by six points.
Appointed in 2021, Howe guided Newcastle to Champions League spots on two occasions and broke the teams 70 year wait for silverware by securing the League Cup in the previous campaign.
"Eddie remains our head coach. I anticipate a strong finish to the current term here and discussions on what comes next will occur at the appropriate moment," Hopkinson continued.
"At present, our attention stays on the ongoing campaigns this year."
Newcastle revealed unprecedented earnings of 335.3 million pounds for the period concluding in June 2025.
The team noted a 44 percent increase in commercial earnings even without European fixtures in that financial span and recorded a net profit of 34.7 million pounds after taxation.
