Newcastle braced for 'ultimate test' against PSG after storm disruption

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe cautioned that the crucial Champions League encounter with Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday represents the "ultimate test" for his team's capabilities, following disruptions to their preparations caused by severe weather.

"We hold them in high regard, particularly their distinctive playing style, featuring athleticism across the pitch, strong technical skills, and intriguing tactics," Howe commented to journalists in Paris on Tuesday.

"This marks the toughest challenge for me in European football. It could well be our most difficult fixture, so we must step up and perform at our peak."

Both PSG and Newcastle enter the Parc des Princes match sitting sixth and seventh in the 36-team Champions League table, tied on 13 points.

A victory for either side secures a top-eight position, ensuring straight entry into the round of 16. Yet a stalemate might push them below the top eight, based on other outcomes, as the nine teams trailing them are just two points adrift.

This scenario would force them into a two-legged playoff next month, similar to what PSG navigated last year en route to claiming the trophy impressively, overcoming multiple English opponents.

Newcastle suffered defeat in Marseille during their previous French outing in November, though they cherish memories against PSG from the 2023/24 group stage meetings, where they triumphed 4-1 at St James' Park and drew 1-1 away after a late spot-kick.

"It was an excellent evening that truly gauged our progress. Those experiences from two years back have undoubtedly aided us now," Howe remarked.

"We approach it with greater confidence, aiming to advance in the tournament and reach the knockouts. We are progressing towards that goal."

The delay in Howe's press conference by an hour stemmed from the Newcastle team's flight from England's north-east being held up due to turbulent conditions.

"The flight itself went smoothly, it was merely the delay beforehand. We sat on the runway, but strong winds prevented departure," Howe explained. "We are grateful to have arrived today."

Newcastle heads into the fixture with only two wins from their past 10 away games across all competitions, missing Brazilian midfielder Joelinton entirely, while fellow countryman Bruno Guimaraes remains uncertain.

"Joe is confirmed out for this one. Scans show it's not serious, but he may sit out a few weeks," Howe stated.

"He will skip several matches given our packed schedule. Our other Brazilian is here, and we will update soon."
