Nagelsmann describes Ter Stegen World Cup hopes as extremely unlikely
The Barcelona shot stopper aged 33 and currently on loan with Girona had an operation for a ruptured hamstring back in February marking yet another blow from injuries.
In a discussion with journalists before the upcoming friendly clash with Ghana on Monday in Stuttgart Nagelsmann shared details of his recent chat with Ter Stegen.
The manager indicated the keeper faces long odds of joining the World Cup roster.
"The chance is very, very, very slim, because you have to consider the overall situation," Nagelsmann explained.
"He didn't play for a year and then got injured. He's been out for a year, so to speak, and played very little.
"He should give it his all in his rehab... But he's not 21 anymore. He's got a few games under his belt.
"I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him, but we all have to be patient."
The seasoned deputy to Manuel Neuer stepped up as Germanys primary choice after the 2014 World Cup triumph retired following EURO 2024.
Only in February Nagelsmann had highlighted Ter Stegen as the top option for Germanys goalkeeping role at the World Cup. Oliver Baumann from Hoffenheim featured in goal during the 4-3 triumph in the friendly versus Switzerland last Friday.
