Mika Godts Delivers Masterclass as Ajax Claim Away Triumph with Spectacular Solo Strike
NAC Breda, facing the threat of relegation, were in dire need of points after managing only two victories in their previous 19 league matches. Ajax, on the other hand, were desperate to collect as many points as possible following a four-point deficit to Feyenoord in the race for second position, which offers direct entry into next season's UEFA Champions League.
Both NAC and Ajax traded early efforts, with Wout Weghorst alongside NAC's Charles-Andreas Brym and Max Balard trying but failing to open the scoring during the first 15 minutes.
Ajax finally broke through after 20 minutes when Steven Berghuis sent a precise long pass to Mika Godts, who then advanced into the penalty area and passed it across to Oscar Gloukh near the far post of Bielica's net. The midfielder calmly finished into the bottom left corner, marking his first Eredivisie goal since the start of January.
A moment of exceptional skill gave Ajax a two-goal advantage just before the interval when Mika Godts picked up the ball around the centre circle and launched a daring run into NAC's half. The Belgian forward outmanoeuvred Clint Leemans, Raul Paula, Fredrik Oldrup Jensen, and Leemans once more inside the box before evading Bielica and completing his impressive individual run with an easy finish.
Raul Paula and Mohamed Nassoh challenged Indonesian goalkeeper Maarten Paes soon after the restart, but the ex-Dallas shot-stopper denied them with a pair of impressive reactions.
Paes shone again by blocking a powerful shot from Kamal Sowah and tipping it over for a corner. In response, Poland's Daniel Bielica demonstrated his skills by denying Godts a brace with a clever stop in the 78th minute.
The second half proved largely subdued, as Ajax, true to form, generated few opportunities while hardly venturing beyond their own territory. The period's most notable moment came in the 87th minute when Ghana's André Ayew directed a header narrowly past Paes' upright.
Ajax maintained composure in defence too, with Rayane Bounida striking the woodwork in the final moments to preserve the 2-0 scoreline. Under interim boss Óscar García, the Amsterdam side secured their second victory in six weeks, keeping alive their pursuit of second place.
