Middlesbrough Dominate Yet Settle for Goalless Stalemate with Southampton in Play-Off First Leg
Middlesbrough kicked off the game with real intent and nearly opened the scoring after only seven minutes, as David Strelec nodded just over from near the goal line off a superb corner from Morgan Whittaker.
Throughout the opening period, Southampton faced constant pressure, yet Middlesbrough's failure to convert chances kept the visitors in the contest. Around the 30 minute mark, Luke Ayling blazed over from a great spot, and moments later, a crucial intervention by James Bree stopped Tommy Conway from putting the home side ahead.
Incredibly, just three minutes on, Conway came agonisingly close again, thanks to a precise through ball from Riley McGree that left the Scottish forward in prime position, but his powerful shot rattled the upright, leaving Kim Hellberg’s squad frustrated.
Heading into the break, Middlesbrough could scarcely believe they were level, with Daniel Peretz pulling off key stops to thwart Conway and Matt Targett towards the end of the half.
The whistle for half time was a welcome relief for Tonda Eckert’s team, who had not managed a single effort on goal during those initial 45 minutes.
The second half began more cautiously, with scant clear cut chances emerging for both teams.
Things looked brighter for Southampton as their performance picked up, stifling Middlesbrough's forward momentum and registering a few attempts of their own to excite the away supporters.
As the clock ticked down, Southampton twice threatened to grab a late victory in the closing 10 minutes.
First, Taylor Harwood-Bellis nodded against the frame of the goal from close range, then replacement Samuel Edozie fired just wide, much to the delight of the home crowd who breathed a sigh of relief.
With the scores level, the second leg at St Mary’s promises excitement, as Middlesbrough remain unbeaten across their past five outings, while Southampton have tasted defeat only once in 24 games across all tournaments.
