Michael Carrick focuses on end of season rather than his own Manchester United prospects

The 44 year old ex United midfielder stepped back into the English football powerhouse as temporary boss until the campaigns conclusion soon after Ruben Amorims unsuccessful stint wrapped up in January.

Carrick has guided a significant improvement in the Red Devils performance and the 3 2 victory against fierce rivals Liverpool on Sunday ensured Uniteds spot in the Champions League with three matches remaining.

However Carricks ongoing role is still unclear which could affect Uniteds approach to transfers after this season wraps up.

Clarity is important Carrick noted before Saturdays away game at Sunderland.

I think as we progress its arriving at the right moment just before the seasons end where we believe we have ended on a high and secured a solid standing.

And clearly regarding my position and its future shape I feel its the appropriate juncture. It was always discussed around the seasons close or exactly at the end so truly nothing has shifted.

When questioned about why clinching Champions League qualification had not apparently bolstered his status Carrick responded: It happened only a few days back and we are focused on wrapping up the season on a strong note too.

I get the query and the timing behind it but from where I stand right now its about positioning the players to end the campaign robustly.

After that as I have mentioned throughout I remain composed about it and it will resolve itself when the time comes. Part of it is beyond my control so we will wait and see.

Although Carrick has stayed reserved about what lies ahead multiple United squad members have supported his continuation as head coach including Kobbie Mainoo who netted the decisive goal versus Liverpool and declared the squad would go to extremes for him.

Carrick when asked if he would alter his methods as permanent rather than interim manager replied: Thats an insightful point. I have stated since the beginning that I have not handled any day here with temporary mindset in view.

If that varies from how others see it I am unsure.

Yet from me and the team we have chosen paths that benefit the squad long term both collectively and for individual athletes in terms of handling them and aiding their growth.

He continued: Perhaps we will find out I cannot say. But definitely I have handled it in a manner that feels correct to me.
