Messi Reaches 900th Career Goal Amid Inter Miami's Champions Cup Exit

The 38-year-old Messi took only seven minutes to hit his landmark, slotting home a composed low shot to put Miami ahead 1-0 in this regional club knockout clash.

However, Nashville's Cristian Espinoza fired in a leveller in the 74th minute to level the score at 1-1 overall, and with Tennessee's side keeping Miami out until the end, they progressed to the quarter-finals thanks to the away goals rule.

Inter Miami's departure felt bittersweet after the early promise of festivity from Messi's opener, in the club's last match at their Fort Lauderdale home ground, Chase Stadium.

This goal brought Messi's total for Miami to 81 since joining Major League Soccer in 2023.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or recipient had netted 672 times for Barcelona, 32 for Paris Saint-Germain in France, plus 115 goals in internationals for Argentina.

Messi's 900th came over two decades after his debut senior strike, a goal for Barcelona in their 2-0 victory against Albacete back in 2005, when he was a 17-year-old newcomer.

Seen by many as football's finest ever player, Messi trails his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo, the 41-year-old Portuguese ace with 965 career strikes.

Before Messi's milestone, Miami coach and ex-Argentina plus Barcelona colleague Javier Mascherano called the total "astonishing."

"I have not added much to his goal haul, not through passes nor as manager now," Mascherano noted.

"I have had the fortune to witness so many of his strikes up close, more than most of you, and that is a real honour.

"The figure we discuss (900) is astonishing, which shows why Leo stands alone."

Sharp Strike

The midweek fixture in Fort Lauderdale held extra weight for Inter Miami, as it bid goodbye to Chase Stadium.

The stadium has been the club's base since entering Major League Soccer in 2020. They shift to a new 26,700-capacity venue next month.

Messi is set to feature in his sixth World Cup this year, with Argentina guarding their crown in the expanded 48-team event across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Argentine has renewed his Inter Miami deal until the close of the 2028 campaign.

Messi's scoring prowess defines his legacy. His 672 Barcelona goals arrived in 778 outings, at a rate of 0.86 each, aiding the Spanish side to 35 honours before his 2021 switch to Paris Saint-Germain.

Over in France, he added 32 in 75 games, securing three prizes, two of them league crowns.

With Miami, 81 goals in 96 outings have lifted the squad to the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2025 MLS Cup.

His 115 caps goals span 196 Argentina appearances, with two in the 2022 World Cup final triumph versus France.

By most standard stats, Messi's count ranks him second to Ronaldo alone.

Brazil's iconic Pele is credited by some with over 1,000 goals, though this remains contested. Key tallies for Brazil, Santos, and New York Cosmos place him at 762.
