Messi on 2026 World Cup: 'I would like to be there'

Lionel Messi expresses a desire to represent Argentina in the upcoming World Cup next year, though he plans to consult his physical condition before confirming if he can achieve that ambition.

The 38-year-old forward for Inter Miami in the MLS guided Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup and hopes to take the pitch as the Albiceleste aim to retain their championship in North America next year.

Eight-time Ballon d'Or recipient Messi shared with NBC News during an interview aired on Monday that he intends to evaluate his fitness next year prior to choosing whether he can participate in the tournament jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

"It is truly remarkable to compete in a World Cup and I would adore to do so," remarked Messi, who will reach 39 years old next June.

"I would like to participate, to feel in top form and contribute significantly to supporting my country, should I make it.

"I plan to monitor that daily as I begin preseason next year with Inter and determine if I can truly reach full capacity, if I can offer value to the squad and the national side, before reaching a conclusion."

Messi, a professional since 2004, seeks another opportunity for a standout performance on the grandest stage in football.

"I am genuinely enthusiastic since it is a World Cup. Following our triumph in the previous edition, the prospect of defending it on the pitch once more is thrilling, as it has always been a aspiration to feature for the national team, particularly in major tournaments."

Messi, who made his La Liga debut for Barcelona aged 17, transferred to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 and arrived in the MLS in 2023.

"Honestly, I appreciate every aspect of life here," Messi commented regarding Miami.

"I resided in Barcelona for much of my career, a truly exceptional city where I matured and experienced numerous memorable occasions, one that we certainly miss.

"However, Miami provides an excellent quality of life, enabling us to savour our days, maintain serenity, and let the children express themselves freely in their routine."

Messi has earned 195 caps for the Argentine national team, netting 114 goals.
