Memphis Depay leaves Corinthians game with injury, in doubt for Dutch friendlies

Prior to his substitution, Memphis contributed significantly to Yuri Alberto's goal by delivering a trivela pass for the pre-assist.

However, this action led to repercussions as Memphis collapsed on the pitch, underwent medical treatment, and then headed directly to the dressing room at the Neo Química Arena.

As the extent of the injury remains unclear, the forward now poses a concern for both Corinthians and the Netherlands national side. Memphis is included in the Oranje squad for their March international matches versus Norway and Ecuador, set for March 27th and 31st, in that order.

Phone controversy

Upon returning to the Corinthians substitutes' bench, Memphis was spotted using his mobile device amid the match. A member of the coaching staff quickly approached, insisting that the player stow it away. This episode drew considerable coverage from the press, prompting Memphis to explain that he was liaising with the medical personnel from the Dutch national team.

"To set the record straight, that instance with the phone was solely to connect with the medical experts in the Netherlands right then," Memphis clarified via a message on X, previously known as Twitter.

"I stepped out to offer backing to my squad, even though I could have remained in the changing room due to the injury."

The Netherlands find themselves in Group F for the World Cup, joined by Tunisia, Japan, and a team from the European playoffs. Their first fixture is lined up for 14 June against Japan at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
