Marseille demolish sixth-tier Bayeux 9-0 in Coupe de France
On Tuesday, Marseille advanced to the round of 16 in the French Cup after a resounding 9-0 triumph over the amateur club Bayeux.
The side managed by Roberto De Zerbi holds third place in Ligue 1, trailing leaders Lens by eight points, and the Italian coach revealed his hunger for trophies by deploying a robust team against the unheralded Norman team.
Marseille's lineup in Caen featured English player Mason Greenwood and 2018 World Cup victor Benjamin Pavard from France. The fixture occurred at the stadium of a nearby third-division club, as Bayeux's own venue lacked sufficient capacity.
Strikes in the opening half by Angel Gomes, Hamed Junior Traore, Greenwood, and Amine Gouiri ensured Marseille dominated proceedings.
The ex-Manchester United striker Greenwood added his second goal shortly after the break, followed by another from Gouiri, plus efforts from CJ Egan-Riley and Neal Maupay.
Greenwood sealed his hat-trick in the 90th minute.
In the upcoming round of 16, Marseille will meet Ligue 1 rivals Rennes, as determined by the draw conducted earlier that day.
The last 16 draw for the French Cup:
Toulouse v Amiens
Strasbourg v Monaco
Reims v Le Mans
Nice v Montpellier
Lyon v Laval
Marseille v Rennes
Lorient v Paris FC
Troyes v Lens
