Manchester United manager Carrick concedes De Ligt may sit out remainder of season and possibly World Cup

De Ligt continues to be out as third placed United travel to Bournemouth on Friday aiming to boost their push for Champions League qualification.

The 26 year old defender has not featured for United since November 30th versus Crystal Palace.

"He is clearly working to return but it is mainly the back problem that is causing issues," Carrick explained.

"We will continue to do all we can to bring him back as soon as possible."

When questioned about whether he might not play again for United this season Carrick replied: "To be honest it is hard to predict because it has dragged on so long.

"I cannot say much more about it honestly. Back injuries can be tricky you know sometimes they seem fine and then suddenly they flare up again.

"We are taking a patient approach and working through the process. We will just need to wait and see. Of course we will give him the necessary time but we are pushing to get him fit quickly though it is tough to forecast.

"I am not holding back any information. Right now we simply do not know so we must monitor it."

De Ligt's problem has cast uncertainty over his participation in the World Cup with the Netherlands raising concerns about possible surgery.

"I prefer not to discuss that just yet," Carrick responded regarding any operation.

"We will certainly do everything possible to support Matthijs and aid his recovery no matter what it requires."
