Manager reactions: A-League semi final first legs
Auckland FC 1-1 Adelaide United
Steve Corica (Auckland FC):
Right after the match, my mind turned to the following week. In the end, it turned out to be a fairly encouraging outcome for our side. Now we simply need to head to Adelaide and secure a victory, nothing more to it.
When we tightened up our defence a bit, they began exploiting the spaces more effectively. Naturally, it drained us considerably. I believe we controlled the opening period and could have netted additional goals, which might have altered the overall picture. We only erred once, allowing them to score, and we must avoid such mistakes in the return fixture. Apart from that, the team performed admirably. Their effort was commendable.
We hold a solid record (versus Adelaide) and I am eager for the challenge. Our players showed great resolve, pushing on despite disruptions and unfortunate injuries forcing substitutions. The replacements stepped up nicely, in my view.
Maintaining focus over 96 minutes without conceding opportunities is tough. The key is staying alert and composed. We recognise their skill on the ball, yet today we proved our defensive capabilities against them. We have managed it before and will replicate that effort on Friday.
Airton Andrioli (Adelaide United):
The opening half was highly competitive. The weather conditions contributed significantly to that intensity. The surface was slippery initially, making adaptation challenging. Players we usually rely on for possession had imprecise passes and poor control.
We created two clear scoring opportunities in the first half that we failed to convert. Auckland gained some advantage from set pieces and deliveries into the penalty area. At the interval, we encouraged the team to stay calm, emphasising that the outcome would not be settled that day. We returned to our typical style and dominated the latter stages. We might have claimed the points after the break.
A few players appeared anxious and struggled with the pitch. I instructed them to spend more time on the ball, and we executed the fundamentals more effectively post interval. The second half reflected our usual approach.
Our goal was to triumph here, yet it ended level. We battled until the final whistle, but our primary aim was victory. The positive aspect is that the decisive moment awaits next week. Hosting at home with fan support will prove a tough venue for them.
No clear frontrunners (in the return match). A 1-1 result here underscores Auckland's quality and experience in these scenarios. I dismiss notions of favourites or underdogs. It remains a balanced contest. We enter with the growing belief and assurance from our recent form.
Sydney FC 1-1 Newcastle Jets
Patrick Kisnorbo (Sydney FC):
This ranks as our strongest showing since my arrival, so I am immensely proud of the squad. They may feel let down by the concession, but their commitment and mindset were spot on this evening.
The team has grasped alternative tactics, which we demonstrated tonight. That is an area we have drilled since I joined. Witnessing it pay off is encouraging. Still, recovery is essential before we tackle the next challenge.
Perhaps the stakes affected them slightly (versus Melbourne Victory). They carried unnecessary pressure, which we shed today to advance as intended. No complaints from me, they have excelled.
Home or away makes no difference in knockout football. It boils down to two goals and a field. Location is irrelevant. We focus on our game plan.
Improvement across all aspects of our play is the goal, starting tomorrow.
Mark Milligan (Newcastle Jets):
The break was bound to pose challenges, and it showed early. We set the pace we desired and sustained it. We scrapped resiliently amid tough conditions: debut playoff, on the road, facing a side fresh from a gruelling encounter with Melbourne Victory. At times, we needed to grind for possession.
On balance, I am not dissatisfied, though better command in key zones would have been ideal. Post interval tweaks brought greater ease in the closing period.
We anticipated their heightened aggression (from Sydney) given the shift from last weeks standalone match to this two legged affair. Emphasis lies on our enhancements. Tidiness in every phase, sound choices, and courage without possession were vital. The latter half saw us handling their threats more assuredly.
I always favour the home edge for Newcastle in my thoughts, knowing our drive and backing at our ground. Tonight's experience will sharpen us for the return, as resuming after rest while upholding standards is demanding.
Confidence stems from our seasons consistency. These athletes seize every chance to elevate their game.
