Man Utd cruise into Women's Champions League quarters

Manchester United easily defeated Atletico Madrid to advance to the Women's Champions League quarter-finals on Thursday, securing a 2-0 victory.

After their 5-0 aggregate triumph over Atletico, Marc Skinner's team is set to face Bayern Munich in the upcoming round.

Wolfsburg also qualified for the last eight, following a strong 2-0 win away at Juventus, resulting in a 4-2 advantage across the two legs.

With a 3-0 lead from the initial match in Spain, United sealed the outcome early, within the first 30 minutes, when Julia Zigiotti Olme scored at Leigh Sports Village.

England's Jess Park then increased the home side's lead with an impressive shot from a quick corner play in the 41st minute.

As time ran out, Atletico were down to 10 players after Xenia Perez received a red card in the 85th minute.

In the earlier match, Vivien Endemann gave the two-time champions Wolfsburg the edge on aggregate during the 18th minute at Juventus Stadium.

The home team pushed hard for an equaliser, yet the contest was decided in the sixth minute of added time in the second half, as Cora Zicai delivered a superb curled shot beyond Danielle de Jong, striking the crossbar before entering the goal.

"We feel great about making it to the quarter-finals; that was our main target," commented Wolfsburg's match standout and keeper Stina Johannes.

"Our performance was solid overall, though the final 20 minutes got tense with Juventus applying pressure."

The German outfit will now relive their victorious 2013 Champions League final scenario in the quarter-finals by taking on Lyon.

"Lyon have a rich legacy and have consistently posed tough challenges. We faced them in the group stage, losing 3-1, and they impressed," Johannes remarked about the French side, winners eight times over.
