Man City 'needed' to beat Liverpool to keep title race alive: Silva

Bernardo Silva, the Manchester City skipper, explained that securing a win against Liverpool was essential to maintain any chance in the Premier League title chase, following their thrilling 2-1 triumph at Anfield under Pep Guardiola.

The away side appeared poised to slip nine points adrift of table-toppers Arsenal, having conceded late to a brilliant free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai.

Yet Silvas leveller in the 84th minute ignited an exhilarating conclusion.

Erling Haaland then edged City ahead just three minutes into added time, though the drama persisted with further tension and disputes.

Gianluigi Donnarumma made a remarkable stop to thwart Alexis Mac Allisters potential equaliser.

Rayan Cherki believed he had clinched the points by slotting home from the halfway line, as Liverpools Alisson Becker ventured upfield in pursuit of a tie.

That effort was disallowed, however, due to Szoboszlais foul on Haaland, prompting the Norwegian to respond in kind.

Szoboszlai received a straight red card for initiating the incident.

"Given our gap to Arsenal, facing Liverpool here is undoubtedly the most challenging venue in the Premier League," Silva remarked.

"The squad sensed prior to kick-off that a defeat would likely end our title aspirations. We recognised the necessity of this victory.

"Optimism remains, and we shall battle to the finish. Consistency in our performances must return."

This success marks Citys initial away win at Liverpool with spectators since 2003, and their first league double over the opponents since 1937.

"Delighted with the result, though these points hold equal value to those from any match," Silva continued.

"The seasons start has been tough, as we have faltered in our duties. A stronger position against Arsenal was possible."
