Man City Mount Second-Half Comeback to Overpower Brentford and Sustain Title Challenge
After Manchester Citys tense 3-3 stalemate with Everton on Monday, the Premier League title destiny slipped from their grasp.
Although the Citizens had a chance to ramp up the heat on Arsenal, Brentford struck first with a significant opportunity, thanks to a classic Michael Kayode long throw that sowed confusion in the City penalty area. Gianluigi Donnarumma mishandled the ball, yet fortunately for the Italian shot-stopper, it was hooked away from the goal line.
City only mustered a genuine threat around the halfway stage of the opening period, as the player who scored twice against Everton on Monday, Jeremy Doku, weaved his magic along the left side before delivering a cross that Erling Haaland nodded over the bar from an open position.
The Scandinavian forward appeared to stir following that miss, and he soon produced the matchs initial effort on goal, latched onto a delivery from the right courtesy of Antoine Semenyo, though his downward header was easily clutched by Caoimhin Kelleher.
The Brentford custodian had little respite before pulling off an excellent block with his legs shortly afterwards, when Doku fed Haaland close to goal, but the latters poke was deflected clear.
Keith Andrewss side rode out the onslaught from City to reach the break without a score, amid jeers directed at official Michael Salisbury echoing through the Etihad as the teams headed off.
Brentford emerged with fresh vigour after the interval, forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma to dive and parry a shot from Igor Thiago near the post, following a clever pass from Kayode to the Brazilian forward.
In spite of the Bees mounting threats, City opened the scoring with a superb effort right on the 60-minute mark.
Just like his second strike versus the Toffees earlier in the week, Doku received possession inside the penalty area from the left, controlled it, then whipped a brilliant shot into the opposite corner.
The away team could not respond, and with 15 minutes left, Haalands anxiety was banished when he toe-poked home from close range after Antoine Semenyos pull-back stirred turmoil in Brentfords penalty box.
Only Caoimhin Kellehers sharp reactions stopped a heavier defeat soon after, denying Phil Foden with a reflex save to tip the ball over from a close-range volley.
Omar Marmoush sealed a third goal in the closing stages, slotted through by Haaland and placing it neatly into the bottom far corner.
This hard-fought victory for City shifts the spotlight back to Mikel Artetas squad, who head to East London on Saturday to take on relegation-threatened West Ham, prior to the Citizens hosting Crystal Palace in their postponed fixture midweek.
For Brentford, they stay in the hunt for a landmark European spot with two matches left, targeting top-flight continental action for the first time in their 134-year history.
