Major bribery probe shakes Czech soccer with mass arrests by authorities

The National Centre against Organised Crime (NCOZ) has informed the Czech news agency ČTK that it is conducting criminal investigations. ČTK reports that FAČR is examining the situation and plans to release a statement after gathering all relevant facts.

"Our unit is handling criminal proceedings at present. Details are being withheld pending input from the High State Prosecutor's Office in Olomouc," stated NCOZ spokesperson Jaroslav Ibehej.

Per reports from iSport.cz, Europol and Interpol are participating, following a probe lasting three years. The outlet mentioned that the operation includes top division and junior games.

"From 6:00 a.m., an extensive operation is in progress, likely the largest ever in Czech soccer," according to a message from FAČR president David Trunda to the executive committee members.

"The focus is mainly on Moravia, accounting for 99 per cent, affecting numerous individuals."

"This stems from joint efforts between FAČR and Czech police forces. Today, the Ethics Committee will initiate actions against over 40 players, administrators, match officials and teams, spanning from the top tier to the fourth division alongside junior categories," Trunda noted, as per iSport.cz.

The FAČR leader was scheduled for the Hall of Fame ceremony honouring ex-national team member Přemysl Bičovský at 9:00 but had to withdraw.

Olomouc lead prosecutor Radim Dragoun indicated that dozens have been held and inspections occurred at residences, workplaces and properties, based on the VSZ site.

This troubling development for Czech soccer arrives one day following the Footballer of the Year reveal and mere three days prior to the qualification play-offs for the 2026 World Cup. FAČR has a media briefing set for 11:00 CET.
