Mainz Claim Two-Goal Edge Over Strasbourg with Quickfire Strikes in Quarter-Final Clash

Mainz kicked off in superb style, coming close to scoring after a mere 80 seconds as Nelson Weiper sliced his effort just past the near upright, though their eager crowd was not kept waiting long for the breakthrough. Kaishu Sano, with only one prior goal from his earlier 76 outings for the side, gathered the ball around the centre circle, drove ahead while fending off a few challenges, then shifted inwards to release a bending 22-yard strike that glanced off a defender before striking the upright and nestling in the top corner.

Dominance was clear from the home side, yet a superb fingertip stop by Mike Penders, who plunged full length to his left, denied Stefan Posch an immediate follow-up. Mainz's number four made no mistake on his subsequent effort, however, connecting cleanly with the corner delivery via a volley that sped beyond the keeper. The away team managed a fleeting moment when Guela Doue's clever backheel sailed onto the net's top, but they struggled defensively, where Paul Nebel saw another attempt brilliantly repelled.

The second half mirrored the first, with Phillip Tietz seeing a powerful shot parried away at the upright by Penders, the keeper soon repeating his heroics by dropping low to deflect a low drive from close range. Strasbourg, winless and goalless in their last three German visits, squandered a prime chance to respond when Julio Enciso, unmarked eight yards out, lofted a weak effort directly at Daniel Batz.

This appeared to shift the tide towards the visitors, as Valentin Barco rattled the woodwork with a close-range blast, followed by Diego Moreira's effort being repelled from a similar position. Still, Urs Fischer's squad hit back, creating three openings for Armindo Sieb; the initial one drew an excellent save from Penders, though the striker might rue the other pair, skewing one astray and mistiming his leap for a far-post header that looped high and was ultimately cleared.

Ultimately, Mainz sealed the result, extending their European home winning streak to seven and positioning themselves favourably for a semi-final spot before the return fixture. Gary O'Neil's Strasbourg, meanwhile, end their 10-game unbeaten sequence in all tournaments and face a steep challenge in Alsace to overturn the deficit and advance.
