Lyon suffer Ligue 1 defeat at Lorient while Nice's woes intensify

Lyon experienced their fifth loss of the season in Ligue 1, falling 1-0 to struggling Lorient on Sunday, as troubled Nice also dropped a 1-0 decision to Angers.

A 39th-minute strike by Pablo Pagis at home proved sufficient for the Brittany outfit to pull away from the drop zone.

Lorient gained an advantage in securing only their fourth win of the term when Lyon's ex-Arsenal back Ainsley Maitland-Niles received a second yellow, resulting in his ejection just three minutes following the opener.

Under Paulo Fonseca, Lyon hold onto fifth spot yet trail unexpected Ligue 1 frontrunners Lens by 10 points.

Nice's difficulties mounted earlier that day with a seventh straight defeat across all tournaments at home versus 11th-ranked Angers.

Franck Haise's squad entered the Allianz Riviera field bearing the surnames of Terem Moffi and Jeremie Boga on their jerseys to rally behind colleagues sidelined by illness after fan targeting during last Sunday's clash near the training facility.

Before a thin yet antagonistic audience prompted by Nice ultras urging a boycott, the home team failed to penetrate the visitors' solid defence, with Yassin Belkhdim's effort shortly past the 30-minute mark deciding the outcome.

Tom Louchet saw red for Nice soon into the second half as they slipped to 12th place in the standings, matching Lorient's 17 points.

"This is clearly a tough stretch," Haise remarked.

"Progress will stem from the field. But we cannot overhaul everything immediately or regain our flair overnight. We must persevere and advance gradually each day."

Clearly impacted by the supporters' stance, the Nice manager described competing amid such an adversarial setting as "quite unique".

"It's the initial occasion I've encountered this... Our standing is already precarious, and having a significant portion of your supporters opposed makes it undoubtedly more challenging," he continued.

In other action, Auxerre escaped the basement position via a 3-1 victory at home over fresh last-place Metz.

Le Havre and Paris FC ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
