Lyon miss opportunity to climb up Ligue 1 table with goalless draw at Angers
Lyon aimed for a seventh straight victory over Angers in their head to head record, yet they struggled to create notable chances during a subdued first half.
Afonso Moreira found a slight opening early on, but his effort was stopped short. Ainsley Maitland-Niles provided the sole on target shot of the half, which Hervé Koffi easily gathered.
The team in black and white, managing only two goals across their previous six matches, lacked threat upfront, as Jordan Lefort nodded over from a set piece corner. It stood as their closest opportunity in a largely uneventful start.
Lyon began the second period with more energy, particularly when Corentin Tolisso received room outside the penalty area for a strike. The Lyon skipper saw his shot repelled though, with Koffi punching clear confidently.
Pavel Sulc soon tried from near the goal line, but sent his shot astray, while the away side failed to break the deadlock.
Moreira, among the most active figures on the field, drifted inside from the flank for an attempt, only to fire high into the crowd.
Late changes from both sides failed to shift the match decisively, leaving the score unchanged.
Angers hold 12th position, even after keeping one of the leagues tighter home defences by conceding just 16 at home.
Lyon slip from European qualification places due to their recent slump, winless since the middle of February.
